Woman killed in house fire in South Yorkshire, England

  • Posted on July 24, 2017 at 1:48 am

Monday, January 25, 2010

An elderly woman has died in a house fire in South Yorkshire, England. The woman, who is currently remaining unidentified, was blind and 93-years-old when her bungalow in Sheffield caught fire as a result of an accident in her kitchen yesterday afternoon.

An internal investigation into the fire has suggested that while the woman was cooking, she dropped a towel onto one of the stovetops while attempting to move a pan on the cooker. The towel then set alight. When she attempted to put out the fire, the towel dropped to the side of the cooker, alongside some plastic bags.

A smoke alarm sounded; a nearby resident heard the alarm and went to assist. The neighbour managed to break into the bedroom window of the bungalow in order to be able to get inside the building. The person made it to the hallway but had to double back upon seeing the fire and the smoke. It is believed that the woman was overwhelmed by the fumes given out from the plastic which was burning.

At around 1350 GMT, fire service workers entered the elderly lady’s residence to find her collapsed inside the kitchen. People investigating the incident have come to the conclusion that this particular fire was an accidental one. A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service noted: “Neighbours who tried to enter the property were fought back by smoke and flames.”

Eye Care Specialist Tips: Get To Know Your Eye Doctor

  • Posted on July 22, 2017 at 3:58 am

By Allan Wease

Public misunderstanding of the specific function of eye doctors is widespread. Other health experts such as the nurse can clarify their roles and direct individuals intelligently for proper care.

The importance of adequate eye examination cannot be emphasized too strongly. Too often, most people find patients using a pair of glasses that belong to a relative, or using one that was purchased at the local variety store.

The care of the eye is undertaken by four groups of eye specialists:

1. The oculist

The oculist, the ophthalmologist, or the ophthalmic physician is a medical doctor who is skilled in the treatment of all conditions and diseases of the eye. Because of training and experience, he is able to make a more thorough and complete examination of the eye for refractive errors and other changes.

2. The optician

The optician, not a physician, whose concern is to grind, mount, and dispense lenses.

3. The optometrist

YouTube Preview Image

The optometrist, who is licensed to examine for refractive errors in the eye by mechanical means and to provide appropriate corrective lenses, is not a physician, and he does not use drugs in the examination of the eyes.

4. The ocularist

The ocularist is a technician who makes artificial eyes and other prostheses used in ophthalmology.

Among these four eye specialists, the ophthalmologist is the one considered fit to be called as the ultimate eye doctor. Ophthalmologists have finished ‘medical school’ and board on a usual schooling schedule that usually takes 3 years after taking medicine proper in nearly all countries.

How to Choose an Ophthalmologist

Even if eye doctors or ophthalmologists may seem professional enough to perform any surgical operations concerning the eyes or at least examine the eyes for any problems, it is still important to know how to choose the best eye doctor.

Here are some of the factors that you must consider when choosing the best eye doctor:

1. Skills and expertise

A good eye doctor is usually defined by the way his skills and expertise are shown on his credentials such as diploma and license certificates.

Hence, it is important to verify that your eye doctor has the correct and sufficient education to analyze, make a diagnosis, cure, and administer some medications and surgical operations to cure eye diseases. These documents will assist you in analyzing the efficiency of your eye doctor to perform such service.

Be wary of people performing such duties and responsibilities that only licensed eye doctors are allowed to carry out. Consulting them may only produce more harm than good.

Certifications denoting passed board examinations indicate quality and reliable services. Any documents that will serve as evidences of these things must be properly displayed within the office of the eye doctor and must be noticeably identified.

2. Adequate practice and knowledge

Any eye doctor with adequate practices denotes specialization and expertise on his chosen field. This goes to show that a new board passer, even if he is on the top list, is still no match for an eye doctor who has already gained 20 years of experience brought about by constant practice of his profession.

Besides, well-experienced eye doctors could also mean they have attended several seminars and additional trainings regarding the newest methods of vision correction.

3. Most referred

It is always safe to consult an eye doctor who has been referred to you by a relative or a close friend. Their experiences will always tell you how the eye doctor has been efficient in carrying out his job.

Because the eye is such a vital part of the body, it is important to choose only the best and the most efficient eye doctor to perform the protection and proper care for the eye.

Australian cheerleaders told to cover up

  • Posted on July 22, 2017 at 3:58 am

Sunday, April 16, 2006

Australian cheerleaders have been told today to cover up their midriffs under calls by Gymnastics Australia, as they believe it encourages girls to be self-conscious.

Nerine Cooper, head of Gymnastics Australia, told the Sunday Telegraph, “We don’t want girls to feel under pressure to lose weight because of uniforms.”

Lisa Ince, head of Sydney Professional Dancers, disagreed. “It’s ridiculous really, if the thinking is that a midriff is offensive, then every dance school and athletics club would face the same restrictions,” she said.

The ban will affect about 150 teams registered with Gymnastics Australia.

Indiana legislators vote for state constitutional ban on same-sex marriage

  • Posted on July 22, 2017 at 3:57 am

Thursday, February 20, 2014

Indiana’s Senate passed a proposed constitutional amendment Monday that would ban same-sex marriage in the state’s constitution. Indiana’s state law already prohibits same-sex marriage. A sentence banning civil unions was removed from the proposal.

For a constitutional amendment to be approved in Indiana, it must pass both the House of Representatives and the Senate during two separately elected legislatures, which means there has to be an election between the two sets of votes. The proposed amendment cannot be changed from one voting session to another and cannot be changed from the House of Representatives to the Senate. Once the proposed amendment has passed those hurdles, then the amendment goes to Indiana voters who vote yea or nay on the amendment.

Following the House of Representatives’ approval, the Senate passed the proposed amendment, which is known as House Joint Resolution 3, with a vote of 32–17 Monday. Opponents needed eight more votes to stop the proposed amendment from reaching the necessary margin of support.

The proposed amendment already passed both houses in 2011. A change was made this legislative session when the second sentence was deleted first by the House of Representatives and then was passed in a similar form by the Senate Monday. The failure of the second sentence, which proposes to ban same-sex civil unions, could possibly open the door for civil unions in the future. Following the process, HJR-3 will be reviewed again by the next elected legislature in either 2015 or 2016 to remain in process.

Although the amended version grants the possibility for civil unions in the future, some in the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community say it isn’t enough.

“I think it’s still bad because it fails to legitimize us as human beings, since it’s trying to deny us basic rights,” said Myranda Wanden, program director at Indiana Youth Group, an organization that provides support and advocacy for LBGT teens and young adults.

Indiana Governor Mike Pence supported the proposed amendment. Pence, in his “State of the State” speech for 2014, said, “I believe in traditional marriage, and I have long held the view that the people, rather than unelected judges, should decide matters of such great consequence”. Pence also called for a civil debate for the matter and to treat everyone with respect.

“I think the rest of the country is moving towards being more open and accepting about gay marriage,” Wanden said. “I think Indiana, which is a conservative red state, saw this and wanted to resist the changing tide. I think it caused fear in many legislators, but I definitely don’t think it’s reflective of a majority of the Indiana population.”

Indiana is not the only state that prohibits same-sex marriage by law or as proposed by constitution. There are 29 other states that prohibit same-sex civil marriages under their constitutions, while Indiana and three other states prohibit it by statute. The states that allow for some form of same-sex marriage number 17 plus Washington, DC.

Worldwide, there is a wide diversity in same-sex marriage and rights laws. At this time, 17 countries allow same-sex marriage, the most recent being Scotland. Most of the countries that allow same-sex marriage are concentrated in Europe, but there are also countries in South America and Africa, as well as New Zealand, Canada, and parts of Mexico that have legalized same-sex marriage. Homosexual sex is legally criminal in at least 78 countries, and punishable by death in five.

50,000 people refuse evacuation after flooding in India caused by river changing course

  • Posted on July 22, 2017 at 3:57 am

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

The Kosi River changed course one week ago to a path which it has not taken for over 100 years. While 900,000 people were evacuated by rescue workers, new data has revealed that 50,000 people, from the town of Saharsa, have refused to leave their homes.

Advertisements in local newspapers have been used to encourage the people who are still remaining in the area to leave soon. People are encouraged to go to one of many camps, which are funded by the government, to seek refuge from the continued flooding.

People have also started to return to their homes, due to the fact that they have seen the water level drop by over half of a metre in some areas. This is despite statements by officials emphasizing that people may need to stay in the camps for up to six months.

Approximately 1.2 million people are estimated to have had their homes flooded by the disaster. 42 people have been confirmed dead, although The Australian has reported that the actual death toll is likely to be much higher.

The incident started when gushing waters quickly overflowed the channel boundaries on both sides at a rate of about 200 meters per day, flooding vast tracts in Supaul, Araria, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, Katihar, parts of Khagaria and northern parts of Bhagalpur, as well as adjoining regions of Nepal. About 2.7 million people are affected by this flood disaster of massive dimensions, with about 900,000 people in the affected areas having moved to 285 relief camps and 249 health centers. An estimated 100,000 are still trapped in various villages without food or drinking water since several days ago when the crisis began.

During the last 250 years, the Kosi has moved its path up to 150km westward on multiple occasions, leaving behind a series of paleochannels. The river is a tributary of the Ganges, with catchment areas in the Nepal Himalayas, one of the fastest rising mountain chains, flowing through a 150-kilometer wide and 180-kilometer long alluvial fan. Fast silting of the channels by the tons of annuvium brought down by the river makes it drift off so often that it is often cited as one of the text book examples of a dynamic river system to geologists.

Benefits of Organic Products Made From Coconut and Other Natural Ingredients

by

Vikram Kumar

Coconut is a very common food item, which has become part of the household since the stone age. All fridges should have coconut in it as well as the bathroom shelf for that coconut oil moisturiser. These things have become such indispensable items of the household that we cannot make do without either of them even for a week. But very few of us are aware of how coconut can be beneficial to us other than coconut oil. Coconut can also benefit us in other ways like nourishing our hair and scalp by being the vital element of a variety of Cocofina Organic Coconut Products. Let us have a look at exactly how they can be useful.

The Best Nut- Coconut!

Coconut is just a well-rounded, polished and versatile food with lots of fascinating characteristics and tons of offshoot products. To start with, the oil can outdo any commercial sports drink with its high electrolytic content. The oil is nutritious to your hair with a bit of egg added to it. It also acts as a benign version of suntan lotion. It can also act as an immensely helpful food ingredient used for stir-frying. One tablespoon coconut oil provides 14 grams fat out of which 12 grams are saturated. It also helps in producing a line of Cocofina Organic Coconut products.

Coconut butter: – Made from fresh coconut flesh including all the delicious solids and fat, coconut butter is as delicious as it is addictive. It is also a bit sweet in taste as it contains the flesh of the coconut.

Coconut Flour: – Coconut flour is a good for your food if you have a liking for baked items. Two tablespoon coconut fat contains 1.5 grams fat, 10 grams carbohydrate and 2 grams protein.

Coconut Milk:- Coconut milk, made by grating the flesh of the interior of the coconut, is very high on oil content which results in coconut milk being saturated by fats and rich in taste and color. The fat percentage of coconut milk varies from 22% to 5% which makes coconut milk one of the best Cocofina organic coconut products.

Detergent made from organic products

New scientific discoveries have enlightened a new era of household products that are made from organic substances and are more effective and efficient than ordinary ones. One such product is detergent where industrious research has brought about the advent of organic products that are cost effective as well as more efficient such as Eco Egg Laundry Detergent Alternative. It completely replaces the use of washing powders, gels, tablets and liquids as The Eco Egg Laundry Detergent Alternative is packed with numerous natural and powerful cleaning pellets. These pellets reduce the adhesive forces between the fabric of the cloth and the dirt to remove them. Moreover, they ionize oxygen molecules in the water and push them deeply into your clothes, which cause the dirt and grime to be lifted away without damaging the fabric or fading away the colors.

Matt Smith revealed as 11th incarnation of Doctor Who

  • Posted on July 18, 2017 at 2:31 am

Thursday, January 8, 2009

Actor Matt Smith will be the next to portray the Doctor on the BBC television program Doctor Who. Smith will be the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor, taking over from actor David Tennant who will end his time with the series after filming four editions of the program through 2009. The Doctor comes from a race of Timelords, and has the ability to “regenerate” and change appearance when his health is failing. William Hartnell was the first actor to play the Doctor, from 1963–1966. Smith will become the new occupant of the Doctor’s time machine and spacecraft the “TARDIS” in 2010.

David Tennant will be a very hard act to follow, but I’m optimistic that the new Doctor will be just as good.

John Harper, founder of the Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society and a fan of the series, called the decision to cast 26-year-old Smith in the role “wonderful”. MP for Scarborough Robert Goodwill, also a fan of the program, told the Scarborough Evening News: “David Tennant will be a very hard act to follow, but I’m optimistic that the new Doctor will be just as good.”

He is possibly going to be one of the best Doctors we’ve ever had.

Matt Smith, 26, portrayed researcher Danny Foster on the political drama Party Animals, which aired on BBC Two in 2007. Fellow actor Andrew Buchan from Party Animals told The Guardian: “It’s a sublime bit of casting. He’s got that huge hair, a twinkle in his eye — Matt’s the king of geek chic. He is possibly going to be one of the best Doctors we’ve ever had.”

After a back injury got in the way of Smith’s goal of becoming a footballer, his drama teacher Jerry Hardingham at Northampton School for Boys encouraged him to pursue acting. Though Smith did not audition, Hardingham cast him in a school production of the play Twelve Angry Men. Hardingham later convinced Smith to join the National Youth Theatre, and he landed the lead role in the play Murder in the Cathedral, performing before members of the British Royal Family and other VIPs at the Westminster Cathedral.

David Tennant, 37, has portrayed the Doctor on Doctor Who since taking over for Christopher Eccleston in 2005. A major feature of his character’s stories involved a romantic interest in his companion in the TARDIS, Rose, played by actress Billie Piper.

Tennant announced his exit from the program on October 29, 2008, at the National Television Awards in the United Kingdom, during his speech accepting the outstanding drama performance award at the program. Doctor Who was recognized with the award for most popular drama program.

“I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don’t take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you’ll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair,” said Tennant in his address to the audience in attendance at the Royal Albert Hall. He was previously recognized at the National Television Awards for his role in Doctor Who with the award for most popular actor, in 2006 and 2007.

Tennant is currently performing the lead role in Hamlet with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and his engagement at the Novello Theatre in Westminster, London is set to end on January 10. He portrayed Hamlet 60 times with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon prior to the production’s move to London.

Media reports exaggerate cell phone risks again

  • Posted on July 18, 2017 at 2:31 am

Monday, September 22, 2008

Several mainstream news outlets have misstated and overstated a possible link between cellular phone use and decreased fertility in men. A single experiment, which has not yet been published in any peer reviewed journal or replicated by other scientists, observed an average decrease in sperm motility and an increase in free radicals among laboratory sperm samples that were exposed to radiation similar to the radiation produced by cellular phone use.

Dr. Ashok Agarwal of the Cleveland Clinic estimates the overall health impact of cellular phones as “very safe” and reassured a Cable News Network reporter that the research was too premature to advise lifestyle changes for the public. “Our study has not provided proof that you should stop putting cell phones in your pocket. There are many things that need to be proven before we get to that stage.” He noted that his own cell phone was in his trouser pocket while he was giving the interview. Dr. Agarwal is the lead researcher for the study and Director of the Center for Reproductive Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.

Cell phone industry spokesman Joe Farren agreed with Dr. Agarwal’s assessment about the devices’ overall safety: “The weight of the published scientific evidence, in addition to the opinion of global health organizations, shows that there is no link between wireless usage and adverse health effects.”

The controlled experiment used sperm samples from thirty-two donors: twenty-three healthy men and nine men who had fertility problems. Sperm were then exposed to radiation for one hour at 850 megahertz, the most common frequency for cell phones in the United States. Dr. Agarwal’s study raises a possible concern that cell phones kept on belts or trouser pockets and used in conjunction with wireless bluetooth earpieces “could cause harmful effects due to the proximity of the phones and the exposure that they are causing to the gonads.” He also noted that follow-up research is needed to determine whether the body’s skin and other tissue affords protection from the potential damage.

Several news sources ran misleading reports that overstated the risk.

The Los Angeles Times asserted a fallacious causal relationship that Dr. Agarwhal had not drawn and ignored his opinions that cellular phones are safe and no change in phone use is necessary. Instead, the piece opened by ordering men to stop keeping cell phones in their pockets:

HAVE YOUR SAY
Do you think that cell phones are safe?
Add or view comments
“Attention male cellphone users of reproductive age: Take that phone out of your pocket. Information published today suggests that the radio-frequency energy released by cellphones decreases sperm quality in men.”

Ciol News ran a similar account:

“Beware men! Do you have the habit of keeping your mobile phone in the pockets of your trousers while talking on hand-free? Or do clip the mobile to your belt while talking? If so you are doing that at the cost of your fertility, warns a recent study.”

Mobile Magazine went a step further, also alluding to previous media exaggerations about cellular phone dangers:

“Oh no! It seems that mobile phones are getting even more problematic than ever. After getting linked to everything from migraines to cancer, it seems that the radiation from cell phones is now being connected to stupid sperm. Yes, I’m talking about the little swimmers that lead into a conversation about the birds and the bees.”

Mobile Magazine also ended in a misleading manner with “I wonder if it’s healthier to put your phone in your shirt pocket instead,” failing to mention that Dr. Agarwal had addressed that concern and had called it an unnecessary precaution.

Not all news sources overplayed the findings. CNN and United Press International ran balanced reports that did not suggest dangers or precautions beyond the lead researcher’s conclusions.
